Gelinas HVAC : Heat Pumps

Have you heard of the new trend in heating and cooling equipment called heat pumps? Well if you haven’t read on, I will be talking about what heat pumps are and why they are fast becoming the most popular choice in heating and cooling systems. After talking with some heating professionals at Gelinas HVAC I learned that heat pumps are an all in one assembly that can replace or help your traditional heating and cooling systems.

Heat pumps are very energy efficient and a much less invasive install than other more traditional heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps move heat, instead of consuming energy to generate it. They don’t require any form of fuel consumption, they run purely off of electricity. Heat pumps can provide equivalent space heating and air conditioning at a quarter of the cost of traditional heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps are so energy efficient that they qualify for a Efficiency Maine rebate as well as qualify for an Energy Maine loan to have them installed.

You might wondering how a heat pump could produce heat in our cold Maine winters. Much like refrigerant systems, heat pumps take advantage of compressors that absorb heat energy in the air and circulate it between the indoors and outdoors. The entire heat pump unit only consists of an indoor unit called the Air Handler, and an outdoor unit which is call the heat pump. When the temperatures outside are cold, it takes the natural heat energy in the air and moves it indoors. Alternatively when it is warm outside, it reversed the process and takes the heat from inside and moves it outside.

If you’re still unsure about these new heat pumps, here are couple things you might love about the units. For one, as mentioned above, they are a far less invasive install and can be mounted on any flat surface. One feature I love about them is that they are self modulating, offering a “set it and forget it” options, keeping the interior temperature to whatever you have set it to. Another great thing about heat pumps is that the main unit is outside, providing a quieter indoor environment. Not only do they heat and cool your home or office, they also improve air quality by absorbing dust, mold and microorganisms.
